Occupational Therapy

WHAT IS AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST?

Occupational Therapists at Bright FACES are highly skilled healthcare professionals who support children and their families to develop independence and confidence in everyday life.
Individualised interventions aim to improve a range of skills, including fine and gross motor skills, sensory regulation, handwriting, school readiness, and self-care – to name a few.

Occupational Therapy focuses on individualised goal setting in collaboration with parents, caregivers, and teachers (where appropriate). Goals are reviewed regularly and adapted throughout the course of therapy to ensure ongoing progress.

An Occupational Therapist works with people who have fine and gross motor skill difficulties. These include:

Motor Skills

Motor skill difficulties can support a child’s ability to play, learn, and participate in daily activities.
Occupational Therapists assess and provide help for:

  • Fine motor skills (e.g. handwriting, drawing, using scissors)

  • Gross motor skills (e.g. balance, coordination, core strength)

  • Motor planning and sequencing (i.e. learning how to organise and complete movements)

Sensory Processing

Sensory processing is when a child has difficulty interpreting and responding to sensory information, such as touch, sound or movement.
Occupational Therapists assess and provide help for:

  • Sensory sensitivities (e.g. avoiding certain textures, noises or movements)

  • Sensory seeking behaviours (e.g. constant movement, crashing or touching)

  • Self-regulation (e.g. staying calm, alert and focused)

Daily Living Skills

Everyday self-care skills help children build independence and confidence.
Occupational Therapists assess and provide help for:

  • Dressing and grooming skills

  • Feeding and mealtime routines

  • Toileting and hygiene
